No need to get into a discussion about the merits of lane splitting. These morons are obviously doing it wrong. Nice that his buddy stopped to see if he was hurt. The idiot who crashed was lucky, apparently only suffering a broken wrist.

The driver of the Civic must have been somewhat traumatized after that. And that's precisely why I hate this kind of riding. Sure, they're hardly putting innocent lives at danger, but the emotional toll that comes from hitting/being hit by a motorcycle has got to be HUGE.

And, because I'm weird like that, here's the exact location of the start of the video:

You can click along and see the spot where they crashed. What's interesting is I was just talking about doing hot laps of this very highway a few days ago.

I remember that. Rush hour probably isn't the best time to do it, though.

In a couple states, California for instance, lane splitting is totally legal (a holdover from the air-cooled bike days).
Just like in racing though, I believe it's the passer's responsibility to make a clean pass. It wouldn't hurt to have a double glance in the mirrors if you live in one of these states.
I know when I went to Brazil this is everywhere. In every stretch of traffic is dozens of bikes going double what everyone else is between the cars. It's mayhem, but I did not see one accident because everyone has to be heads up.

Oh, definitely. These guys got the wrong idea.
